Milford Writers’ Retreat 2020 Booking Now

Places are booking now for the next Milford Writers’ Retreat. This is limited to 12 writers accommodated in single ensuite rooms.

The date will be Saturday 6th to Saturday 13th June 2020, which is a delightful time to spend a week at Trigonos, in the glorious Welsh countryside, being looked after and given time to write, write write. There’s no element of critique in this week, and therefore there’s no bar as to who can attend. You don’t have to have sold a story as long as you are serious about writing and want to spend a week without distractions, though most of our attendees will be published/professional SF writers.

Come and work on your next book, or your magnum opus.

Details are here: http://www.milfordsf.co.uk/retreats.htm

Read about why you need a writing retreat here on Jacey Bedford’s blog.

Cost approximately £650. (If Trigonos raises prices between now and then, that might change but not by much.) There’s a deposit of £150 on booking, and the balance is payable to Trigonos during the week. Milford doesn’t make a profit out of this. Your fee represents Trigonos’ charge for food and accommodation, plus only £10 to Milford to cover basic expenses.

The last retreat (in May 2019) was hugely successful with 12 writers huddling over their laptops in their own spaces for much of the time, and coming together at meal times and breaks. It provides the perfect pacing.

The day goes like this:

  • eat breakfast
  • write for 2 hours
  • drink coffee (or tea)
  • write for 2 hours
  • eat lunch
  • write for 2 hours
  • eat cake, drink tea (or coffee)
  • write for 3 hours
  • eat dinner
  • either hide in your room and continue to write or socialise in the libarary

Catie Murphy won the (metaphorical) prize by writing 33,000 in a week. Henceforth we decreed that wordcount will be measured in murphys. :-). I was editing, but I’d have been very happy with a half-murphy if I’d been working on a first draft.

Please contact me if you are interested and have any questions. The booking form can be downloaded from the website. We have to have bookings finalised before December and it’s first come, first served.

Bookings for the 2020 Milford Conference (12th – 19th September) are now well underway, but there are still a few places left. You do have to have sold at least one piece of writing to attend this, though many of our attendees are multiply published. Details on the website: http://www.milfordsf.co.uk/

In 2020 we have two funded places available for Writers of Colour to attend the main Milford Conference. Applications for these bursaries open in September 2019, i.e. NOW, and close on 28th September 2020. http://www.milfordsf.co.uk/bursaries.htm

  1. Reblogged this on Loving Life in the Rain and commented:
I’ve attended the Milford Conference a few times over the years and it is SO worth it. Not got to the writing retreat yet, as it’s in term time, which is difficult for me. But I am sorely tempted… it would be wonderful to have a week of uninterrupted writing time in such lovely surroundings and with a bunch of writers too.

I know I work from home, so theoretically I should be able to write when i want to but there are so many interruptions, even when I’ve set aside writing time. The phone rings and someone wants something (yesterday). So as I arrived at Trigonos for the retreat in May this year, I felt stress dissipating like a cloying mist driven away by the sun. Aaaaand relax!
